Oftentimes, homeowners convert their home heating system from oil, resulting in an abandoned buried oil tank. This can result in a very serious problem because the tank can corrode overtime and contaminate the soil. Environmental fines for not properly decommissioning a buried oil tank can be sizeable. Having the property swept for an oil tank before buying an older home is a practical decision.
